So... will tinting these high beam reflectors Red kill the performance?
Will they change the color of the output?
These are the questions we answer in todays video.

All right moment of the troops - oh, what this is a red high beam section for a wrx. This is one of the most popular things you can do with custom headlights and we're going to test today to find out if it hurts your performance for the actual high beam. This is a doctor meter that i picked up from amazon and i just have it set up so that i can catch the light from the sensor right there. First off we are gon na take a test using the factory bulb and factory chrome reflector, we're gon na shut off all the lights in here, so that only the light from this high beam gets soaked into the meter, and when i turn this thing on it Automatically goes to lux, so i'm going to change its unit of measure to foot candles.

We are going to see what kind of readings we get here. That's about the brightest spot that i can get 708. What is it? 724. 725.

725. It's super common to be asked about lumens and the lumen output of something, but we're gon na focus on foot candles. I think it's just a better unit of measure for usable light, so maybe we'll do a whole long. Video kind of boring, though i am going to change the bulb over to the other side, we're going to use the same exact bulb so that we don't have any sort of differences, and i think it's probably the only hp3 bulb that i have so we'll use That, oh, it's hot bro all right before that! I want to show you what i painted that section with i've had a set of wrx limited, led headlights sitting on the shelf for a while, so i tore the lens off.

I opened them up and i just removed the chrome piece for the high beam housing itself, so this is metal cast from dupli-color. They have this in a bunch of different colors, so i'm going to show you what it looked like when we actually sprayed down the part with this make sure you paint everything around bread too. It's like yes, the main thing is you just don't want to put it on too thick. You don't want any runs or anything like that, and you also don't want it to be too heavy of a coat in the end.

Anyway, you need there to be as much reflection as possible if you want to have that chrome look. Otherwise it's just going to look like red. I think you should read the instructions like. I don't think order is not even from instructions.

Don't tell me what you do that already looks pretty sick, so i did a couple light little coats on there and this stuff is pretty cheap. It's like 10 bucks a can. So it's not like it's gon na cost. You an arm and a leg to try.

It, but you only have one shot. That's the thing: it's chrome, you can't like spray anything on there. You can't throw like adhesion promoter or anything. You just have to do a few light coats of this and, if it's too heavy there's not really any stripping it down, otherwise you'll kill the chrome altogether.

That looks really cool. I think we're good that looks. Kind of pretty one thing you do need to use is just some compressed air to blow off the part, because you don't want to rub or smear anything on it with any sort of microfiber. That will scratch the surface, which kind of sucks, because you only have one shot and if it doesn't stick to the chrome right, it's just going to look bad and there's not really anything you could do about it.
Do you think that this red coated reflector is going to make it have red light output? I don't really know i've never tested this, so let's give it a shot, give it power and then we're gon na see what kind of things the meter says too. All right moment of the truths, oh, what that is definitely red. This is definitely not street legal. You cannot do this, how funny dude, so i guess this is why they do it in yellow, because you want to have that like jdm, yellow output but yeah.

This is definitely not gon na work out. This is definitely not an okay thing to have on the car um. Let's take a look at the meter. All right, i think, that's.

100. 243.. 243.. I can see the hot spot 65..

That's it yeah check it out from this side. Yeah, that's the hot spots right there. That's so crazy! We're gon na get some output shots tonight, but i have a question for you: do you think that this would look good if it was in gold or some sort of a yellow output? Color? Do you think it's worth the trade-off of that drop in output from the full chrome to this red? I don't know it's like a third as strong. It seemed like if you want to see the output shots of these lights on the street at night.

Make sure you are getting emails from me easiest way to do that. Just sign up for headlights 101. I'm gon na put the link below it's a free online course showing you how to open all sorts of different headlights and then you'll get to see what this thing looks like pumping out red light onto the street. I think one thing is safe to say that if you want to be able to use your high beams - and you want that output do not paint them red and i'm guessing do not paint them blue either.

That made a pretty giant impact. I know we've done tests with black paint. This is one where a lot of times people will say. If you just use some sort of a chrome like a reflective coating on there, then that's gon na still keep all of the output.

I think this proves that that's not the case and big shout out to the homie j for always dropping everything. To send me footage. Last second, should should make a tick-tock my favorite screwdriver. We should totally.

I think if u replaced the red color to blue it will give a good light like 8000k hid color

This is exactly what I encountered with the "smoked tinted headlight lenses. Those are definitely a DO NOT BUY, they hurt light output by what seemed like half! Don't buy them!

Would have love to see it in yellow…pretty sure yellow would have had a higher colour output than red

If anything I'd do this in blue so it's an actual acceptable to fashion colour bwhen off

Well Flyryde, i bought a damaged tail light from a 2015 mustang, so i can open it and see how it produces that glow and it's something… The LEDs are tiny, yet powerful! I want to say there's only like 6-7 LEDs for each bar on the trail lights. The LEDs are red behind a clear, frosted lense and all of that is behind a clear red lense. What i need to figure out now is how to replicate the look and function into my 96 mustang tail lights. Wish me luck 🤞

How about tint on the outside? Made to let light out and not in so how dose that affect the output?
